Biography

Steve Burnett joined the faculty of the Kellogg School in 1981 as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Marketing and is currently Professor of Strategic Management. His teaching, research, and consulting interests focus on the interface of corporate, business, and market strategy.

As the member of the Kellogg faculty whose primary responsibility is the School's executive education mission, Professor Burnett is involved in a full range of Kellogg executive offerings. He is faculty director of the Advanced Executive Program, Kellogg's oldest and most senior management program. He founded and directs the Kellogg Management Institute, the School's newest general management program. For twenty years, Professor Burnett has played an active role in developing and popularizing the notion that custom or company-specific executive programs can be powerful forces for implementing organizational change. In addition to writing and speaking about custom programs, he has designed, directed, and taught in dozens of Kellogg custom offerings for such companies as Brunswick, British Petroleum, R.R. Donnelley, Ernst & Young, General Motors, Goodyear, International Paper, Motorola, Sears, Spiegel, USG Corporation, and the Zurich Insurance Group.

Professor Burnett also teaches in Kellogg's full-time masters program, as well as in the School's executive masters programs in Germany, Israel, and Hong Kong.

In addition to his involvement in Kellogg executive and degree programs, Professor Burnett has lectured, conducted workshops, and advised top management on marketing and strategy issues in over a dozen countries for some of the world's best known companies. Recent examples include: Bristol-Myers Squibb, Caterpillar, CIGNA, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, IBM, and Mobil.

Professor Burnett's research on strategy and marketing has appeared in Research in Marketing, Journal of Marketing, Strategic Planning Management, and other publications. His writings on management education have been published in the Bricker Bulletin, Harvard Business Review, and Advances in Strategic Management. He has also served as a McKinsey judge for the Harvard Business Review and supervised numerous case studies.

Professor Burnett holds the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key and is a member of several professional and honorary societies, including Alpha Kappa Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma.
